Linköping

Right outside of the creek called Stångå, in the landscape of Östergötland, is where Linköping is located. In the city lives around 120 000 inhabitants, making Linköping the seventh biggest city in Sweden. There is a well known university, called Linköping Universitet, which was founded in 1975. In the city center there is also a massive and impressive church in gothic style, decorated with 107 meters high towers. Other places worth seeing is the Linköping slott (the castle), Stora torget (the big square) where there is a statue “Folkungabrunnen med Folke Filbyter” made by Cark Milles, a special hotel called Frimurarehotellet, Miljonpalatset (palace) which was founded 1897-1898, the old water tower which are housings nowadays, and the Cathedral school. During the 50’s and 60’s there was a lot of reconstruction in Sweden and at that time one decided to divide the city into one old and one new part. In the old part the old wooden buildnings were moved to create an area of this authentic style. During the 21st century some new buidings has been added to this area, which has the same architectual style. These buildings are Linköpings stifts- och landsbibliotek, Drottningtornet, Mjärdevi Science Park and Saab Arena, which all are in modern style.

In Linköping there is a grand cultural focus and there are a lot of theatrical performances taking place at Östgötateatern, Dansens hus, Sagateatern, Nationernas Hus and at Saab Arena (earlier named Cloetta Center). Other examples of cultural experiences are Östergötlands museum and the art hall Passagen. Would you like to know anything more about what is happening in Linköping?
